Today, essential oils have become the go-to treatment for a variety of skin warts especially for those of us who simply are averse to the idea of applying very expensive medications only to get side effects in return. Or even undergo more expensive wart treatments like cryosurgery, keratolysis, electrodessication, infrared coagulation, and laser treatment. Sure, these works. But, if Mother Nature already has the answer, why not give the natural methods a try first?

A Closer Look at Warts

There are many different kinds of warts. Despite this, they are all caused by more than 130 strains of the virus called Human Papillomavirus or HPV. Each strain or type of HPV can lead to different kinds of warts. This is what makes it quite challenging. The following are the different kinds of warts.

  • Common warts – As the name implies, these are very common warts that tend to grow on the back of our hands, the toes, and the fingers, although it’s not unusual that they also grow anywhere else in the body.
  • Plantar warts – These are found only on the soles of our feet, especially on the balls and heels as these are often the areas with the greatest pressure.
  • Flat warts – These are also called verruca plana and are often found on the face and the hands. They are usually arranged linearly.
  • Butcher’s warts – These are often found in the palmar surfaces of the hands especially among butchers or any other profession that handles meat.
  • Anogenital warts – These warts are found in the region surrounding the genitals and the anus. These are often classified as symptoms of sexually transmitted infections.
  • Filiform warts – These warts are often found on the skin surrounding the eyes, the nose, the mouth, and the chin. These types of warts tend to grow rather quick.
  • Cancerous warts – There are certain types of HPV that have a high risk for the development of cervical cancer, vulvar carcinoma, penile carcinoma, oropharyngeal cancers, and vaginal carcinoma.

HPV is spread on direct contact with an infected individual. It is also possible to get infected just by using the items that the person who has warts frequently use. If there is no break in your skin, then the infection stays on the skin. However, if there’s a break in your skin, there’s a possibility that it will reach other parts of the body by being absorbed in the blood.

What happens is that when human papillomavirus invades a skin cell, it induces changes in the microstructure of the cell. This leads to the thickening of the outer layer of the skin primarily the stratum corneum, stratum granulosum, and stratum spinosum. The virus also affects the blood vessels located in the junction of the dermis and the epidermis. Overall, these produce the characteristic appearance of a wart.

Our 6 Best Essential Oils for Warts

There are plenty of essential oils that are used in the management of skin conditions like warts. However, we did a little research and found the following 6 to be highly effective in the removal of warts.

Tea Tree Essential Oil (Our Recommendation)

Tea tree essential oil bottleThe antiviral properties of tea tree essential oil makes it one of the undisputed leaders in the management of HPV infections or warts. Viruses are known to encapsulate themselves so they will not be easily targeted or destroyed by the immune system. Tea tree essential oil destroys this viral protective capsule exposing the HPV to the body’s immune system cells. Here’s the best part. Tea tree essential oil also helps enhance the overall function of the immune system. Additionally, its cicatrisant properties allow it to hasten the speed of cellular regeneration. This simply means that once the warts have been removed, the continued use of tea tree oil will help heal the damaged skin cells. This makes tea tree essential oil also highly effective in the management of acne, eczema, psoriasis, and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Oregano Essential Oil

Oregano essential oil bottleKnown primarily for its antibacterial and disinfectant properties, oregano essential oil is also beneficial in the treatment of warts. In fact, it is widely regarded as one of the fastest and most effective anti-wart treatment around. Unfortunately, it is so effective that it is considered as a “hot oil” as it naturally brings a burning or stinging sensation. It can also irritate the skin especially those who have very sensitive skin. Its main ingredient, carvacrol, is what gives it its unprecedented anti-wart properties. Oregano essential oil also has excellent anti-inflammatory properties which has been shown to reduce or even retard the growth of the wart. Its antiviral properties also help in the management of warts by rupturing the protective viral capsule. This exposes the viral genome to attack by the cells of the immune system.

Thyme Essential Oil

Thyme essential oil bottleAside from the fact that it is one of the most versatile herbs in the culinary world, the essential oil of thyme is also effective in the management and treatment of human papillomavirus infections as well as other inflammatory skin conditions like acne, eczema, and dermatitis. It may not have antiviral properties like tea tree essential oil and oregano but it does provide an excellent antiseptic effect. This helps sanitize the surrounding area of the wart so that it will no longer spread. Perhaps one of the best effects of thyme essential oil is its ability to speed up the process of skin tissue healing and regeneration. It is also for this reason that thyme essential oil is also used in the removal of scars as well as hardened or thickened skin cells because of pox marks as well as acne and warts.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil bottleWe all know the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of lemons and how these can benefit our skin as well as improve general health. It has also been shown to be effective against warts by boosting the ability of the various cells of the immune system to fight the warts virus. When combined with other essential oils in our list such as tea tree essential oil and oregano essential oil, the effects can be particularly dramatic especially if you consider that it also helps hasten the speed of dermal regeneration. This means that our skin will look fresher and more vibrant with the application of lemon essential oil. However, you should understand that if you have very sensitive skin, putting on lemon essential oil may sting especially if you stay under the sun. As such, if you have to apply it directly on your skin, it is essential to stay in the shade.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus essential oil bottleFor very persistent or stubborn warts, eucalyptus essential oil has been shown to be particularly effective. While researchers are still investigating the actual mechanism of action of eucalyptus essential oil in this regard, it is widely observed as being a very effective treatment for a variety of skin infections. Perhaps it is because of its superb antiseptic properties that give it its excellent anti-wart capabilities. It is often indicated in the management of wounds especially ulcerations, abrasions, sores, cuts, and even burn injuries. It’s also effective in the management of insect bites and stings. Eucalyptus essential oil is best mixed with other essential oils to have its optimum benefits in the management of warts.

Frankincense Essential Oil

frankincense essential oil bottleKnown for its very distinct scent, frankincense essential oil can be a very excellent natural anti-wart treatment. Experts believe that its ability to draw oxygen towards the cells and tissues of the skin help bring life back to the HPV-damaged cells. This allows the individual cells infected by HPV to repair themselves. Additionally, the cicatrisant characteristics of frankincense essential oil can help in the faster healing and regeneration of the damaged skin cells. It is also a well-known cytophylactic which simply means it can helps strengthen the different cells and tissues of the skin and different organs of the body. This is important to help prevent the spread of the HPV infection to other parts of the body.

Just Remember

In using essential oils for the removal of warts, it is important to try it first. That’s why we strongly recommend diluting the oils with a carrier oil just to be on the safe side. While we cannot promise that all of these will work on you, we do recommend seeking the advice of a dermatologist if, for some reason, there is no change in the appearance of your wart after a month or two of continued use. Like medicines whereby individual idiosyncrasies can play a role in the therapeutic effectiveness of drugs, the same thing can be said of essential oils.
